January 23-25 Events in Washington DC: Haiti Advocacy Working Group

Haitian Americans, Friends of Haiti, and Haitian civil society leaders will converge on Capitol Hill from January 23-25 to meet with members of Congress to discuss progress in rebuilding Haiti. Organized by the Haiti Advocacy Working Group, a coalition of international development, human rights and faith based organizations, the gatherings will “advocate for a just reconstruction and development process in Haiti, one that prioritizes the needs of women, internally displaced persons, smallholder farmers, the urban poor, immigrants and other vulnerable Haitians, includes the full participation of Haitian grassroots groups and the Diaspora and holds the US government accountable for delivery of its commitments.

The schedule includes: 

Thursday, January 12 – 2 Year Earthquake Commemoration

4pm: Haitian Embassy hosting mass in remembrance of earthquake victims at National Shrine.

Monday, January 23

Morning/Afternoon: U.S. House sponsoring roundtables w/ HAWG, Haitian & Diaspora partners & USAID, State, Admin. on Land/Housing, GBV, Aid Accountability and Procurement.

1:30-3:30pm: HAWG Strategy Meeting on Land and Housing.

4-6pm: GBV Panel, hosted by Representatives Frederica Wilson and Barbara Lee.

6-8pm: HAWG sponsored reception. 

Tuesday, January 24

9am-10:20am: Rep. Yvette Clarke sponsoring private breakfast, hosted by Management Sciences, to focus on cholera and health.

Noon-2pm: Rep. Yvette Clarke sponsoring and TransAfrica Forum hosting a viewing of a documentary, ‘Where did the money go?’, and follow-up briefing, on aid accountability, transparency and procurement.

2-4pm: Rep.’s Lee, Wilson and Clarke co-sponsoring panel on Land and Housing.

6-8pm: Transafrica Forum hosting Haiti event at Busboys and Poets, 14th and V St NW.

Wednesday, January 25

9:30am-10:15am: House Rayburn Press Conference with members present.

10:30am to 12:30pm: Rep. Waters sponsoring panel on Democracy and Governance.

Afternoon: House sponsoring round tables w/ HAWG, Haitian & Diaspora partners & USAID, State, Admin., on Land/Housing, GBV,  Aid Accountability and Procurement)
