Former Mintz Levin associate, Brian Concannon Jr., spent 8 years in Haiti, helping to make the justice system work for the majority of Haitians who are poor. He now directs the Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti (IJDH), which recently moved to Boston. IJDH works in Haitian, U.S. and international courts to enforce the basic rights that Haitians need to enforce to escape the cycle of poverty and vulnerability to disaster.
Brian will speak about how U.S. legal skills and lessons from our struggles for justice can contribute to the establishment of the rule of law in Haiti as a bulwark against the natural, political, and economic disasters that regularly beset the country. He will also discuss how lawyers in the U.S. can pitch in on this vital work, including pro-bono work, policy advocacy and financial support.
IJDH’s work includes:
Prosecuting Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier, with pro-bono assistance from Mintz Levin and Ropes & Gray;
Rape Accountability and Prevention Project, Haiti’s leading legal program combatting gender-based violence;
Health and Human Rights in Prisons Project, with Boston-based Partners In Health; and
Housing Rights Advocacy Project, enforcing the rights of displaced earthquake survivors.
